If anyone could help me with addresses or email addresses on the following individuals, I would greatly appreciate it. These are the members of the 1946 Tiger football team - taken from the team photo that James Bell has emailed. I am trying to contact these individuals to invite them to the brief ceremony that will pay tribute to their national championship.

If your name is below (or if you have the info on a friend), please let me know both the email address and home address by replying to this email.

LRHS OLD MEMORIES

and THANKS!

This page is dedicated to all students and faculty members at Little Rock High School of Arkansas.

More than 50 years ago, Little Rock had four High Schools which were LRHS, Dunbar, St. Mary's and Catholic High and at least four Junior Highs feeding them.  Students at East Side, West Side and Pulaski Heights went to LRHS.  Needless to say, LRHS was a big school and the graduating class in 1948, for instance, numbered over 400 students.

Many graduating students continued their education at different colleges; some joined the Armed Services and postponed any college work; some got jobs and didn't go to college; others married and started their families; some moved away with jobs, making other states their homes, etc.

The picture below will bring back old memories to all those attending the huge and beautiful LRHS spread out over several blocks! Like all High Schools, class reunions are held periodically.  Hopefully, this page will not only bring back old memories of high school days, but perhaps will find some lost Tigers for classes listed.

Our many thanks for all contributors to LRHS Website thus far:  Betty Brooks (Yarbrough) '50, David E. Powell '50, Billie Geurin (Sharp) '48, W. Martin "Snookie" Hamilton '48, Neil H. Dobbins '48, Tom Curry '48, Ray Flack '49, Harrison Beal '49, Leslie Light '48, Marilyn Green (Ryburn) '50, Peggie Williams (Linz) '49, Leslie Smith '49, Dr. Bill Wright '48, John Bowden '49, Al Heiman '49, Paul Snodgrass '48, Nancy Mabrey (Mullenax) '51, Bettye May (Butler) '48, Tom Curry '48, Mary Jo & Clyde Horton '47, Bob Bailey '47, Jim Bell '47, Charles Case '51, Lloyd Miller '48, Dr. Bill Floyd '49, Jim Tribble '49, Bob Demmer '49, Peggy Pyron '49, George 'Nick' Plastiras '50, Bob Scroggs '50, Bob Chapman '51, Curtis Finch '51, Mildred Glover '51, Sue Ann Jordan (Stephens) '51, Tandy Allen '52, Ethel Belle Griffin (Curry) '52, Rosemary Davidson (Griffith) '46, Sue Ann Jordan (Stephens) '51, Bill W. Westside & Eastside Junior High Schools Update!

EDITOR'S NOTE -- Received the following pictures and this story update from Paul D. Snodgrass about Eastside and Westside Junior Schools which are now apartments & UMS at WSJH. Go to the sites, too.

Ray,

During a trip to Little Rock earlier this month, we drove by West Side to see how the 'old' building looked. It looks VERY GOOD, I am pleased to report.

The ARC of Arkansas opened its doors for the loft apartments at West Side on December 17, 2003. All of the broken windows are gone, of course, replaced with nice, new frames and glass. The interior of the building has retained some of the junior high architectural features and this adds to the appearance, as well as preserves the integrity of the once very fine school.

The West Side auditorium has been 'leased' and renovated for the University of Arkansas Medical School for a unit specializing in developmental delay problems. There is appropriate signage on the rear south side as well as the west side entrance. I took a few pictures and will try to e-mail those to you.

For our Internet friends who want to see inside West Side, go to the following website: http://www.arcarts.org/westside_lofts.htm or visit http://www.arcark.org and scroll down to the appropriate listing for West Side Lofts.

With reference to East Side Junior High, I had received an article about a discussion regarding the auditorium. The options did not sound good to me, since one include tearing down this building that was erected in 1911 (I am a preservationist, whenever possible). At the corner of 14th and Cumberland entrance to the auditorium, there was a 'flyer' posted on the door that stated a Historic Commission hearing was to be held in early June, and I wondered what the result was.

I telephoned Steve Hitt at the Little Rock office of The ARC, whom I had met several years ago when East Side was in the early stages of its renovation to loft apartments. Steve told me that the auditorium would be saved and converted to additional loft apartments. He stated that some of the building's architectural features would be preserved, as that is the mission of The ARC.

I expressed regret that the University of Arkansas Law School, located in nearby MacArthur Park, did not see an opportunity to use East Side's auditorium, in the way the Medical School is using the auditorium space at West Side.

This East Side Auditorium has a cornerstone stating that it was constructed in 1911-1912 to serve the then high school, which East Side was until Little Rock High was opened in 1928.

The East Side website for The ARC is www.arcarts.org/eastside.htm

Additionally, Steve told me that The ARC had acquired The Oasis in West Little Rock, a place of beauty where we held memorial services for a couple Class Reunions. This ownership will enhance the grounds and continue to make its facilities available to interested individuals or groups.

Certainly, we can be grateful that The ARC has acquired West Side and East Side, as well as The Oasis. Particularly, we can be glad that 'our schools' have been saved from demolition, and will continue to serve useful purposes for years to come.

Best wishes.

SNODGRASS RECEIVES GENEALOGY AWARD

The National Genealogical Society conducts an annual newsletter competition for Family Associations. A panel of judges reviews the newsletters on the basis of the following criteria:
    1. Material interest, variety and originality
    2. Writing and editing quality
    3. Readability and attractiveness
    4. Overall publication makeup

Winner of FIRST PLACE is 'THE MACE, Snodgrass Clan Society, Paul D. Snodgrass, Editor, in recognition of excellence in communication'.

An official announcement of this award is to be made at the National Genealogical Society Conference In The States, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in May 2003.

Since January 1994, Paul has served as editor of this publication for the Snodgrass Clan Society. He retired from an almost 45-year insurance career at the end of 1993, and has devoted his retirement time to serving as a volunteer for many non-profit groups.

The contents of the journal/newsletter he prepares are sent to him by members of the Society and by friends, who have items to share in the genealogical quest for more information about family histories. This includes individual ancestor charts, family group sheets, wills, deeds, personal stories, pension applications, and articles of interest.

As a companion to the semi-annual journal/newsletter, called THE MACE, Paul publishes annually a Family Name Registry. This registry provides information about current members who are researching early Snodgrasses and their descendants. The purpose of the registry is to enable members to contact one another for the sharing of data when they are researching the same individuals.

Paul is a past president of the Fairfax Genealogical Society, Historic Vienna, Inc., and the Optimist Club of Vienna. He is an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, and the Stonewall Manor Community Association.

As a result of his family history research, Paul discovered Peter Warterfield, his great-great grandfather who served with General George Washington at Valley Forge. This enabled Paul to join the District of Columbia Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. He currently serves this Society as its Registrar.

Recently Paul and his wife Flo attended the 55th Reunion of his graduating Class of 1948 from Little Rock High School. On their drive home to Vienna, Virginia, they made a side trip to Union City, Tennessee, to meet a Warterfield cousin discovered on the Internet. During that visit, while discussing other Warterfield cousins, Flo discovered that one of her cousins is married to one of Paul's Warterfield cousins in Georgia!

Genealogy is a fascinating activity, and full of interesting developments!
