Tim's Loading Tips

Start with a clean rifle. If it's not clean, then refer to Cleaning Tips page.

Now with a clean rifle, first thing clean out the barrel with the proper cleaning jag and cotton patch. Swab the clean dry patch in the barrel 3 or 4 times, this will remove any left over oil in the bore. Next point muzzle end of the barrel toward the ground. Place a firing cap and only a cap (no powder or ball in the barrel) over the nipple and pull the trigger to set the cap off. Do this about 2 or 3 times. This will dry any dampness that may have accumulated. If you're shooting a flintlock just make sure the barrel is dry and the touch hole is clean, and wipe any oil from the pan.

OK---- Now you're ready to load. If you're going to shoot accurately then you should load the same way everytime.

Accuracy Tips & Suggestions

  1. Accurately measured charge of powder down the barrel.
  2. Properly fitted bullet on the muzzle. You may want to use a short starter to start the bullet onto the muzzle. Then with your ramrod push the bullet the rest of the way down the barrel. Making sure it is properly seated against the powder charge and no air pockets exist between the powder and bullet. Don't pound the bullet onto the powder charge. (Some types of bullets need lube, for information on which types require lube refer to the Gunpowder & Bullets Page).
  3. Pull hammer on 1/2 cock. Now add the firing cap, while keeping muzzle of barrel pointed in a safe direction. (preferably toward the ground). Now your ready to fire. Be sure of your target.

If you're not sure of these procedures E-mail us. or ask questions at your local gun store, or contact the manufacture.
