Spam is defined as being any unsolicited or unwanted e-mail
message a person receives. E-mail Spam is invasive Internet advertising,
as the recipient usually does not specifically request it, but
receives it anyway. Spammers (the people responsible for these
messages) send many copies of the same message, in an attempt
to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose
to receive it.
Unsolicited mass e-mailing has become a serious problem for many.
e-mail Spam wastes time and resources, and rarely is used to promote
legitimate products and services. Most Spam is commercial advertising,
typically for supposed new technologies, "get-rich-quick" schemes,
legal services, or possible scams. Spam costs the sender very
little; most of the costs are paid for by the recipient or the
carriers.
Spammers get your e-mail address from a variety of sources,
usually by purchasing e-mail lists. You may have been added to
one or more of these lists by filling out a form or survey on
any one of thousands of Internet sites. E-mail addresses can also
be found through newsgroups, chat rooms, search engines, etc.
At NetPlus, we do not allow any e-mail to relay through our servers
and we do not provide lists of our users to any outside parties
for any purpose.
Also, you do not have to be listed anywhere to get Spam. E-mail
lists are often created using Internet mailing lists, or by simply
searching the Web for e-mail addresses. Sometimes Spam is sent
to a generic address list with no disclosed recipients, so even
if your e-mail address is not listed anywhere on the Internet
you may still receive some.
The first action you do NOT want to take is to follow the
instructions in spam e-mail and use the "remove" option. This
lets the Spammer know they have reached a valid e-mail address
and they will continue to send you Spam, probably to a greater
degree. If you don't want to receive Spam, make sure you only
give your e-mail address to friends and family, or other people
that you know. Our best advice is to just delete the Spam e-mails
as you get them. You can also file an abuse report with the system
where the Spam originated, but usually they are aware of it before
you get the Spam.
Try not to give out your e-mail address when you are browsing
sites you do not know or trust. Many services exist on the Internet
to help you create a free e-mail account that you can use when
a site asks you for an e-mail address. Two of the most popular
are offered by Yahoo and Microsoft (Hotmail). You can click on
the links below for more information and to get signed up with
an e-mail address through them:
