11/18/03 - NEW SPAM AND VIRUS FILTERING AT NETPLUS! An issue developed with Mailtopia during beta testing that will delay the application. Rather than continue with even more delays, we are implementing a new spam filtering service beginning today or tomorrow. This filtering will not involve any action on your part in the initial phases. The new filtering has many levels, and we are beginning with the simplest level initially and will progressively become more aggressive over the days and weeks ahead. Once we activate the filter, you will begin to see some of your mail tagged with a keyword [SPAM] in the subject line. This identifies mail the filter considered as suspect spam. You can then delete it as needed or filter it to another folder on your local system. This initial setting will allow us to tune the filter and better identify spam for better filtering in the future, while at the same time allow the user to get a feel for what is being tagged. This level of filtering will be low at first and some spam will get through untagged. As we gradually increase the filter level, you should see more tagged spam. We will gradually increase the level of filtering so that less spam is passed to your mailbox. We will also be activating a process called quarantining, which will put the suspect mail in a special area for review before its sent on to your mailbox. More on that at a later date. Eventually we will activate blocking, which will block all spam from entering your email. This will come after the filters have been operating for a while and have acquired more refined spam definitions. The filter will also be blocking all mail infected with viruses. This will not tag the infected mail, but block it completely so that you will not be bringing viruses into your local systems. The automatic spam and virus filtering is included with your netplus account and there will be no additional charge for this service. Please keep in mind that no spam filtering technique is 100%, but over time, your spam will be greatly reduced. There is also the possibility of a false positive, legitimate mail that gets caught in the filter. This can be caused by many factors, keywords in the subject or body of message, attachments used, senders location, etc, but we will work hard to eliminate these and find a balance between soft and aggressive filtering techniques. We appreciate your input and patience after the filters are in place as we tune and adjust the filters. We will notify you before we activate major features or increase the spam filtering levels. Thank You, |
