Problem: My dial-up connection will not save my password. What could be causing this?
Solution: Sometimes the Windows password file gets corrupted. The best way to fix this problem is to delete
the password file and have Windows build a new one.
- Click on the Start button in the lower left-hand corner of your desktop screen,
go to 'Find' or 'Search' there, and click on 'File or Folders' on the right.
- In the window that opens you will see two fields labeled 'named' and 'look in'.
In the 'named' field, type "*.pwl" (without the quotes; the first character is an asterisk (*), which you get by holding down the Shift key on your keyboard
while you hit the number 8 key.) In the 'look in' field, make sure that either "Local Disk (C:)" or "My Computer" are showing.
- When both of these fields are ready, click on the Search Now button.
- In the results box on the right, a file should appear. Do a right-click on the name of the file with the right mouse button and then click on Delete
from the menu that appears. If a window pops up asking if you are sure you want to delete the chosen file, click on the Yes or OK button there.
- When you are done, restart your computer by clicking on the Start button and choosing Shutdown. Then, on the window that pops up, choose Restart and click on the OK button.
When Windows starts up again, it will build a new password file. The next time you connect to the Internet, you will have to type your password in again before you connect.
