Once Saved, Always Saved:
-
Aug. 2007
Our pastor is preaching that "once saved, always saved" is a lie. That God will take our salvation away from us if He so chooses.
I believe - Romans 8:38-39 "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Does this speak directly to the contrary? Does this not say that NOTHING can separate us from God? Nothing can take our salvation away? Please clarify this for me.
Thank you and God Bless,
Lori
Dear Lori;
Thank you for viewing the website and thank you for your question. I’m amazed at your question because we just did a study on this last Sunday in our Sunday school class. So, I have all the verses handy.
I think your pastor is right that God can take away our salvation if he wanted to. But he doesn’t want to. The Bible is very clear that God wants us to be saved and spend eternity with him. Jesus paid a GREAT price so that we could. Additionally, God will not go back on any of his promises to us. And he has made many promises concerning our salvation, as I will show you from Scripture. Look at this verse:
-
2 Pet 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance
|
God has promised us eternal life. Eternal means forever, not just until we commit some sin. Everlasting life is forever and is not provisional on what we do or don't do. Look at these verses:
-
John 3:15-16 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life : and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
John 4:14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.
John 5:24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
John 6:27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.
John 6:40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
John 6:47 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.
John 6:54 Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
Acts 13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.
Rom 2:7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
Rom 6:22-23 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 Time 6:19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
Titus 1:2 In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
1 John 2:25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.
1 John 5:11-14 And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God. And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:
|
We don’t earn salvation by works that we do, it is a FREE GIFT from God. If we could loose our salvation by committing some act of sin, that would mean we had earned salvation by not sinning:
-
Rom 3:23-24 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
Rom 5:18-19 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.
Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Rom 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?
Gal 2:16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
Eph 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Tit 3:5-6 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
|
We are saved not by our works, but by the work that Jesus did on the cross. Once we have accepted the free gift of salvation, we are SEALED by the Holy Spirit. God did the work to save us and God does the work to keep us:
-
Psa 37:28 For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.
Psa 55:22 Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.
Psa 66:9 Which holdeth our soul in life, and suffereth not our feet to be moved.
Psa 121:3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
Prov 2:8 He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.
Isa 49:8 Thus saith the LORD, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, …
John 10:28-29 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.
1 Cor 1:8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.
2 Cor 1:22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
Phil 16 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:
2 Tim 1:12 For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.
2 Tim 4:18 And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
1 Pet 1:4-5 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
2 Pet 2:9
The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished:
Jude 1:1 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:
Jude 1:24 Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy,
|
So the Lord does the work to save us and the Lord does the work to seal us. And this work was done before the FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD…..before we even committed our first sin, before Adam and Eve committed their first sin:
-
Mat 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world,
1 Pet 1:18-21 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God.
Rev 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, (Rev 13:8)
|
OK then, God did the work to save us, God does the work to keep us, and we are sealed from the foundation of the world. God is doing all the work, we are promised in 2 Peter 3:9 that God doesn’t want people to perish but he wants everyone to accept his free gift of salvation, so why would God WANT to take it from us? He doesn’t and the Bible is clear about this.
I hope this answers your question. You should know however, that there are many good Christians that would disagree with me on this matter, but that’s OK. I have to go by what the Bible teaches, and as you can see, there are MANY verses that make it clear that once you are saved, you are saved for eternity. I for one, am VERY happy about that!
God bless.

Satan & Demons in Heaven:
-
Mar. 2007
I have read several verses with "and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.
Does this imply that satan still has angels(for lack of a better word) in heaven?
That there might be a house clening so to speak in heaven,or maybe a metaphor ?
Also can you suggest addition web sites that might help in my personal studies.
Scottie
Dear Scottie;
Thank you for your questions. I'll answer your last question first, concerning other websites. I don't realy have a list of websites because I haven't had much time recently to browse though sites and check content. I will give you a warning though, be extremely careful about the information that you read on the internet. Just because someone has a website, that doesn't make them an expert on the Bible. All it makes them, is a person that has the ability to build a website. That warning would apply to my website as well. You should check everything you read through the filter of God's Word. If it doesn't line up with what you read in the Bible, then disregard it. Anyone can build a website on any topic without any formal training in that field. So, you have to be careful about the information you get from the internet. I would recommend a good study Bible. My personal favorite is the Thompson Chain Reference Bible. Also, I recommend a Matthew Henry Commentary. Both of those are excellent resources for Bible study and if you can't afford to buy them, you can get a copy from the library.
OK, so, having given you the disclaimer... Let's look at the verses you mentioned. I did a search on the phase in question, " heaven shall be shaken" I found three verses in the New Testament that use that phrase. All three are from what's known as the Olivet Discourse. This is where Jesus is telling the disciples about the end times and the things that will be happening. I'll post the verses so that everyone will be able to read them:
-
Mat 24:29-30 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
Mark 13:25-26 And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory
Luke 21:26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.
|
All three of these verses are Jesus telling the disciples what the signs will be right before his return. This also matches what the prophet Isaiah said would happen before the "Day of the Lord."
-
Isa 13:10-13 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible. I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir. Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger.
Joel 3:15-16 The sun and the moon shall be darkened, and the stars shall withdraw their shining. The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.
Isa 34:4 And all the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled together as a scroll: and all their host shall fall down, as the leaf falleth off from the vine, and as a falling fig from the fig tree.
|
So, the prophets foretold this event and Jesus has said it will happen and then John sees this future event in a vision and records it in Revelation:
-
Rev 8:12 And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
Rev 6:12-13 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.
|
I don't believe this has to do with the angels/demons, and I don't believe this is a metaphor. I believe that this is a description of actual events that will take place just before Jesus' return to judge the earth. I believe that there are too many verses that describe this event to think that it is anything other than a description of actual, physical changes in the sun, moon, and stars. Prior to Jesus' return there will be incredible physical changes in the world around us and therefore it would make sense that there would also be many changes in the rest of the universe.
We are told in scripture that the fall of man in the garden of Eden effected all of creation and that the earth has been "groaning" since that time. As we look forward to a time when our bodies wll be perfected by Christ, so to does the universe travail until Jesus returns:
-
Rom 8:21-22 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
|
Now, having said all that, there is a passage in Revelation 12 that is similar and in that passage, we are clearly dealing with a metaphor. It is describing Satan and the angels that departed with him:
-
Rev 12:1-10 1) And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: 2) And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. 3) And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads. 4) And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. 5) And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. 6) And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. 7) And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, 8) And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9) And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 10) And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
|
In chapter 12 of Revelation, the woman is referring to the nation of Isreal, the child is Jesus, the dragon is Satan, the third part of the stars are the angels that fell with Satan. So lets look at this chapter in the order it's given. In verses three and four, Satain and the demons are cast to earth. Verse 5 covers the entire birth, life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Then we move forward in time to the time of the tribulation, the first three and a half years. In verse 7, 8, and 9 there is a great war in heaven and Satan is cast out of heaven.
So, this passage tells us that there will come a time in the future when Satan and his demons will in fact be banished from heaven, but, that time has not yet come. It is still in the future. As of right now, he still has access to the Throne and he is accusing us before to the Father day and night. We also see this in Job chapter one.
Therefore, back to your original question; "Does this imply that satan still has angels(for lack of a better word) in heaven?
That there might be a house clening so to speak in heaven..." The answer is YES. However, we know this from the passage in Revelation 12, not the ones in the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke).
I hope I have answered your question without making the subject more confusing.
God bless and keep reading the Bible.

Children in church:
-
Mar. 2007
How or what does the bible say about keeping our children interested in church?
Is it unholy for a church to keep young children involved in games at church while the pastor is preaching? the children have no idea what the preacher is saying and they do get bored.
Dave
Dear Dave;
The Bible tells us that it is our responsibility to teach our children God’s laws. This should be our first priority as parents. Look at the following verses:
-
Deu 6:7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up
Deu 6:20-25 And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath commanded you? Then thou shalt say unto thy son, … the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day. And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath commanded us.
Prov 22:6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Eph 6:4 And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
|
Notice that these verses are telling the parents to teach their children. It’s our job as parents. For the most part, the things discussed in a sermon are not geared for very young children and they become bored and fidgety. So, I don’t think there is anything wrong with having the young children leave the service. However, I think it would be a good opportunity to teach the children Bible verses or Bible stories rather than just playing games.
