Taxes
Do you pay someone to prepare your taxes? Do you spend hours or days preparing them yourself? If you have access to a computer (which I know you do or you wouldn't be reading this) there is a better way.

There is a software program called Turbo Tax that makes filing simple and easy. My tax return includes a 1040, a Schedule A, two Schedule C's, a Schedule E, a Schedule F, and a bazillion miscellaneous forms and attachments. Even with all that, I was done in three hours. I've been using Turbo Tax for 9 years now and have never had a problem with the program or with the IRS.

Turbo Tax is an interview process. The software walks you through the filing process so that you are certain not to miss a single legitimate deduction. When you purchase the software, they usually offer free electronic filing with the IRS and you get your return back a lot faster.

If you use an accounting software (such as Quicken) through the year to keep track of where you spend your money, this speeds the process up even more. This is a good idea anyway, then you can know for certain what happened to last weeks paycheck.

Another way to save on long distance phone calls is to purchase pre-paid phone cards. Often the price per minute on a phone card is far far cheaper than the rate offered by long distance carriers. You can use these phone cards from any phone (including your own home phone).

Credit Cards
The best way to save money is to NOT use your credit cards. Have you noticed how much money credit card companies spend on advertising? There is a reason for this, they make BIG BUCKS from consumers like yourself. But if you already have a running balance on a credit card (or two), there is still a way to save money.

Most credit card companies are offering incentives to have you switch your balance. Take advantage of this. You can switch a high balance to a new card and receive 2%, 1%, or even 0% interest for an introductory period. Make certain you cancel the old account. Don't leave it open because you will be tempted to use it. Don't just cut up the card, send them a letter asking them to close the account. If you don't, that account will still show as open on your credit report and work against you if you are applying for a mortgage.
