Jewel Cave is credited as being the third longest cave in the world with 127 miles off surveyed length. More territory was being surveyed every week in '86. As we were escorted through the newly discovered "Scenic Area" of Jewel , our tour guide provided a very authoritative description of the formation and the history of the cave. She explained to us that the caves were between 30 and 40 million years old and that stalactites provided a method of dating the cave. The history of the cave was particularly of interest to me. Prior to 1959, only about half mile of the cave had been discovered; however, it was realized that the significant air movement indicated a much larger cave. The "Scenic Area" was discovered in 1961 and the visitors center and Scenic Cave Tour Route was first opened in May of 1972. The construction of this Scenic Cave Tour Route required the use of timbers in certain areas to shore up the ceiling of the cave. This construction began in 1966.

As we walked through the Scenic Cave Tour Route, our tour guide explained that it required several million years to form an inch of a stalactite. I realize that this was inconsistent with what I have seen on the tour. I looked up to one of the timbers above my head to see a 3 inch stalactite that had formed on one of the beams. This was similar to many other places on the tour where I saw stalactites on hardware that had not been installed until after 1966.

Knowledge is a wonderful thing. Hypotheses and theories are valuable tools used by scientists to gain knowledge. However, faith is often considered inconsistent with science by the academic community. It is an unfortunate thing when a scientists is so wrapped up in the scientific method that they cannot leave room for faith.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

Is it too hard for God to create the Universe with apparent age? He certainly created Adam as a full grown man. Hypotheses and theories can be much more accurate if we start from the testimony of an eyewitness who cannot lie, that is God himself. We have three witnesses, God's Word, our conscience and all of creation to help us to know God.

Romans 1 shows us the consequences of ignoring the evidence that is all around us. 18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, 19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man--and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

Many worship the gods of humanism and/or technology (another image make like corruptible man) as fervently today as men worshipped idols in the Old Testament. Rejecting the knowledge of God results in all manner of corruption and self-deception. Regardless of what someone believes about the age of the Earth, it is what they believe about the finished work of Jesus Christ that determines their eternal destiny.

Psalms 14:1 The fool has said in his heart, "There is no God."
