| Residents of Somerset honored their fallen hero’s
during a special gravestone marking ceremony. |

Today’s ceremony at the New Reading ceremony honored Johan
Anspach, an American Revolutionary War soldier, a celebration
Muskingum County Sons of the American Revolution President, Keith
Kaufman, says shows just how patriotic the residents of Somerset
are. “People always turn out for things like this. The local
American Legion, they were kind enough to offer their post for the
reception, and they came out to do a salute.” |
Others participating in today’s event were speakers
from the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution, descendants
of Johan Anspach, and a local pastor. But the event was not complete
without the help of Brownie Troop #565. “I know their troop leader
told me they were really excited about today, that they were really
looking forward to this and I guess they had already practiced
passing their wreathe. I like to involve the younger generation to
let them experience their heritage and to let them have an
understanding.”
More than 75 people beat the heat this
afternoon to pay their tribute to Johan Anspach and to watch the
unveiling of a patriotic war marker on his grave.
This is the
second tribute Kaufman has been involved in, and he thinks it’s
something every resident should be involved in. “I don’t know how
many people realize it or not, but we have more than six thousand
Revolutionary War soldiers buried in the state of Ohio, that’s the
largest number in the Union, so we can be proud of that as
Ohioans.”
A second grave marking honoring 1812 soldier, Jacob
Spohn, also took place today in Somerset at Binckley
Cemetery. |
