Donald A. Isgrig

LT. COL. DONALD ALONZO ISGRIG, (U.S. Air Force, Ret.), age 70, of Little Rock, did not die, but slowly faded away from this Earth on Oct. 28th, 2000.  He was the son of Ben C. Isgrig Sr. and Thelma Carlisle Isgrig of the Fourche Dam Isgrigs.

He is survived by his wife, Nina Isgrig of Alamogordo, N.M.; a son, Michael A. Isgrig of Little Rock; two daughters, Susan Kelly Crane of Eugene, Ore., and Daiquiri Carter of Sherwood and their families.

As is the southern tradition for a second son, D.A. left the family plantation and made a new life, traversing the skies at supersonic speed in the defense of his country.  He served gallantly in the Korean War flying the F-86 Sabre Jet and was awarded the Airman's Medal for bravery and valor while flying intercept missions with the 32nd Fighter Interceptor Squadron in Soesterberg, Holland, during the height of the Cold War. Don was a member of that squadron when they won the Air Force's William Tell competition in 1966 establishing them as the best and most deadly squadron in the U.S. Air Force.

D.A. retired from the Air Force as commander of the 4756th Operational Maintenance Squadron at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Fla., in 1972 and returned to Little Rock where he served a rocky tenure as Deputy Director of Little Rock's Bureau of Conventions and Visitors.  The expertise garnered from his Air Force leading record of more than 2000 hours in the F-102 Delta Dagger soon led him to Alamogordo, N.M. where he piloted his beloved "Deuce" as a target drone for the Sperry Rand Corporation's, 'PAVE DEUCE' program.  This program was instrumental in the development of the 'Stinger', a hand held, heat seeking, surface to air missile, that was used so effectively against the Soviet Air Force by Afghani freedom fighters.

In the later years Don was appointed by Gov. Bruce King of New Mexico to sit on the state's Parks and Tourism Advisory Board and he wrote a weekly column for the Alamogordo Daily News.

He was a member of the Little Rock High School's P.I.E. fraternity and the Seratoma Club.  He was an active member of the Air Force Association and a past president and member of the Retired Officer's Association.  He was a member of the F-86 Sabre Pilot's Association, the Confederate Air Force's Ghost Squadron and a Master Falconer in the Air Force's Order of the Falcon. He was a Republican and an avid golfer.  A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Nov. 18th at the Rose Lawn Memorial Cemetery.

Donald A. Isgrig was a proud Arkie and a true patriotic American. He risked his life so that we all might live free.  His family rejoices that he has "slipped the surly bonds of Earth and dances the skies on laughter silvered wings" for eternity. Reach out your hand, Dad, and touch the face of God. (written by son)
