Subject: [LRHSClassOf47] Gene Eberle's Surgery

Hi All -

I forgot to notify you that Gene Eberle, our Reunion Chairman, had surgery this past Wednesday. As I understand it, he had a back/neck problem involving the spinal cord. I believe he had several disks fused together.

At any event, he went home the day after surgery and is recuperating.

(I tried to call Gene this morning to confirm the above but was unable to reach him.) Gene Eberle

Hi All -

Bob Bailey received the following letter from Don Campbell and shared it with me, so I thought I would share it with all of you. (By the way, it was not a computer-printed letter. Don must have typed it on an old fashioned typewriter.)

Dear Bob:

Carolyn Scruggs tells me you had surgery immediately after the 1947 reunion. I am sorry to hear this, but trust you are making a good recovery.

In light of your condition I hesitate to write you but I don't know who else to write address. Please pass this note on to the appropriate individual or group.

I want to thank the Class of '47 for inviting me again to preach. Thank you for that stunning photograph of LRHS in the snowstorm. And then I was floored to receive a check for one hundred dollars. I did not expect an honorarium and don't want to accept it. So I endorsed it over to Scott Connections, the local history group with which I've worked. I trust that will be all right with your committee.

It was fun seeing old friends out at the Oasis that Sunday morning.

Gratefully,

(signed) Don

Hi All -

Bob Bailey is recovering from his surgery (he says, "I had the surgery on schedule, I seem to be recovering on schedule and I guess I'll start the chemotherapy on schedule") and sounds like his old self gain.

This is to advise you that he is now receiving phone calls and would like to re-establish contact with the outside world again.

If you want to call Bob, his phone number is:     (501) 224-2066.

I know he would welcome any and all phone calls.

When I talked to Bob this morning, he said he had had a piece of toast for breakfast, the first solid food he had in eight days and was feeling better.

When I asked him if he would like to receive phone calls, Bob said, "No, not yet. I'm still weak and am going to need to get as much rest as I can. I would appreciate your telling everybody how much I appreciate all their thoughts and prayers."

Bob is scheduled to start chemotherapy in six weeks.

The following message was received today from Steve Collie, Betty Standard Wright's son-in-law. Jim Bell!

From: "COLLIE, STEVEN"

Subject: RE: Betty Standard Wright

Mr. J.W. Bell,
Mr. Norman Henson,

Thanks so very much for your gracious reaction concerning the LRHS 55th reunion and Betty Standard Wright. The information you have forwarded to me via e-mail thus far should expedite the gathering of information.

I plan to print out as much as possible to forward to her and hopefully get a computer set in place at her home as soon as possible to view the LRHS web site and e-mails available. I know she'll enjoy the web site and hopefully join the yahoo group you've mentioned and be part of it for a long time.

The following is a short summary of the circumstances that initiated our acquaintance. Believe me, I'm one who certainly believes in divine intervention.

Betty, seemingly healthy just a little more than 3 weeks ago, developed stomach/back pain. We (forcefully) encouraged her to go to the emergency room at SW Hospital where she was diagnosed with cancer and operated on within the week. The diagnosis and outcome was not encouraging, Pancreatic Cancer. The surgeons removed her colon and as much of the sheet type cancer they could. But, God is good! She is still with us.

Anyway, one of the big issues she was upset over was missing her 55th class reunion with the LRHS grads. After listening to her say how she missed visiting with this person and that person, I thought to myself, it would be nice to get whatever information I could about the reunion.

She was able to come home for 3 days but had to return to the Baptist Hospital in Little Rock due to complications. For her, some days are good and others not so, but I know she would appreciate any LRHS well wishers response. Her home address is... 5816 Hopson Drive, Little Rock, AR 72209.

Thanks again for all you've provided!!! You may pass on any of the above message you choose.

HI All -

Ruth and I have just returned from Texas.

I talked to Bob Bailey this afternoon. His surgery last week was successful and they are now taking out the tubes so he's feeling more like a human again. Bob's hoping to go home this Wednesday, day after tomorrow.

However, as he put it, 'I found I have the big C and will be starting chemotherapy in about six weeks.'

Jim Bell wrote the following note about Bob Bailey today, 5/9/02!

Hi All -

Bob Bailey deferred surgery until after the just completed 55th Reunion. Today, he will undergo that surgery in Little Rock's St. Vincent Hospital for removal of unfriendly polyps in his colon.

I talked to Bob yesterday. He said he wanted NO visitors and NO flowers at the hospital (Hospitals are for the sick, he maintains, and he wants to get well and back home as soon as possible).

I'm sure we all wish Bob a speedy recovery.

If you have a moment, you might want to drop Bob a card or whatever to his home address:

This information was taken from Class '47 Web page where the class is planning for their 55th REUNION.

To All -

Our son-in-law will undergo heart surgery in Oklahoma City Monday, February 4th. Ruth and I will leave Little Rock early tomorrow morning to be with him and his family and we won't return until next weekend.

LRHSClassOf47 will therefore be without a moderator until Monday, February 11th. Any changes requested, etc. will be taken care of at that time.

Jim--

I've just found your message, at 10 p.m., so am sure you won't see this until you return from Oklahoma. Please know that we'll be remembering your son-in-law, and all of you, through this anxious time. We've been through heart surgery with Bob--in 1993--and he's still doing great. We trust that your patient will have the same successful results.

Pat Cooper Richardson
P.S. Thanks very much for all your work on memorials and bio updates.
