Subject: [LRHSClassOf47] Mike Kumpuris died July 18, 2010
Dear Classmates -
While planning our Sixtieth Reunion in 2007, Mike Kumpuris and Buddy Coleman of the Class of '45, contacted our reunion
steering committee with the idea of holding a "combo reunion."
Our class decided not to do that, but our two classes did work together and we held our reunions in the same hotel, across
the hall from each other, on May 18 and 19, 2007, while the hotel was being extensively remodeled and, to get to our
reunions, we had to enter through the hotel's back door. It was an experience we will never forget.
We were sorry to learn of the death of Mike Kumpuris. The following obituary is from the July 20, 2010 edition of the
Arkansas Democrat-Gazette:

Subject: [LRHSClassOf47] Great photos of the Third Reich in 1939 and 1940 taken for Life magazine
Dear Classmates -
Wallis Hearon has just forwarded to me photos from the Third Reich taken for Life magazine during 1939 and 1940. They
are really great photos but they're in large slide show files which are too big to send via the Class of '47 group
email.
However, if you will email me at j22bell@sbcglobal.net and let me know you would like the emails, I will forward them
to you individually.

Subject: [LRHSClassOf47] News about Keith Jernigan
Dear Classmates -
Yesterday we received an email from Frances Jernigan which read:
"Just wanted you to know that we were able to bring Keith home day before yesterday and he is so happy to be "sprung".
It was a very long 91 days for him and for all the family, but this is absolutely great to have him back and returned
to his old self. He is going up and down stairs with the aid of a cane and he keeps a walker parked downstairs and one
upstairs. However, I expect it won't be too much longer until he will decide he is ready to "solo". Thank you so much
]for your visit and for all of the cards and notes that classmates sent. Keith re-read them all yesterday afternoon and
he was really touched.
Frances"

Subject: A class golfer...
I don’t know who actually wrote this piece. I received it today from a good friend. It was obviously written last Sunday,
and I certainly hope it was published in the editorial columns of at least one or more newspapers. It says what a lot of
us were thinking and feeling as The Masters came to a close. Feel free to share it with others.
Phil Mickelson
For the past few days, while I tried to enjoy one of the greatest golf tournaments in the world, all I was entertained
with was the Tiger Woods show. As soon as one golfer would hit a tee shot or make a putt, it seemed that the next view
would be that of Tiger Woods. Tiger Woods just missing a putt that would have put him in contention with the other
golfers. Tiger Woods hooking his drive which showed how his time off had hurt his game. Tiger Woods trying to “respect”
the game. How it seemed that the Tiger was able to put his past transgressions behind him and was able to concentrate on
the job at hand. It just kept going on and on about Tiger this and Tiger that.
On the other hand, a little miracle was occurring at the Masters; one golfer just kept smiling. He smiled if he made a
good drive, or if he made a bad drive. He smiled if he made a 50 foot putt or missed a 5 foot putt. As he walked between
holes, he smiled and shook hands with the crowd. He never cursed a bad stoke or blamed another person for a miss. All he
did was smile.
Why would Phil Mickelson be smiling? Here was a man whose wife has breast cancer. Here was a man whose mother has breast
cancer. Here is a man who rather than allow his wife and mother to fight this battle by themselves, took time off from
the PGA tour to be with them. Here was a man that returned to the game he loved when his wife ordered him to. Here was
man, who was so glad for the miracle that was happening as his wife moved closer to a cure, that he rewarded her oncologist
by allowing him to be his guest caddy at last week’s golf tournament. This move, which could have cost Mickelson thousands
of dollars in purse money, was his gift to a man he knew he could never thank enough for what he had given to him.
During the last round today, Phil’s wife was staying in their hotel room since she was still weak from the chemo
treatments she is receiving. Phil did not know as he walked up to the 18th tee that his wife would be there. All Phil
did was smile. He smiled to the crowds, he smiled to the TV audience, he smiled to God. After his last putt found the
bottom of the hole, he hugged his caddy and others and walked to the scorer’s shack. He then gave the biggest smile of
the whole four days. He saw his wife, and even in the midst of thousands of people, it seemed that only two were there.
Tomorrow I am going to smile. I am going to smile if it is nice weather or bad. I am going to smile at the driver who
honks his horn at me, or the driver who cuts me off. I am going to smile if I get the order or not. And when the day is
done, I am going to save my biggest smile for the person who makes me complete. Then I am going to look to the heavens and
give thanks for being able to smile.
Thanks Phil! God bless you and your family. And keep on smiling!

Subject: Kate Smith's first performance of "God Bless America"
In early 1940, Kate Smith, a fiercely patriotic American, and the biggest star on radio, was deeply worried about
her country. She asked Irving Berlin if he could give her a song that would re-ignite the spirit of American patriotism
and faith. He said he had a song that he had written in 1917, but never used it. He said she could have it.
She sat at the piano & played it and realized how good it was. She called Mr. Berlin and told him that she couldn't
take this from him for nothing. So, they agreed that any money that would be made off the song would be donated to the
Boy Scouts of America . Thanks to Kate Smith and Irving Berlin, the Scouts have received millions of dollars in
royalties.
This clip is from the movie "You're in the Army Now". You will see a familiar face in this—one that we are all
very proud of.
Frank Sinatra said that when Kate Smith, whom he considered the greatest singer of his age, first sang this song on
the radio, a million guys got 'dust' in their eyes and had to wipe the tears that flowed freely

I talked to Frances Jernigan who said Keith has been having a roller coaster ride as far as health was concerned ... up
one day and then down the next. Along the way, he has recently had a pacemaker put in and is now in intermediate care at
the Baptist Medical Center in room 680. Chances for recovery seem to be improving.
Keith is okay with short visits, preferably between 2:00 and 4:00 in the afternoons. No phone calls please. With all the

Cards and notes are also appreciated. Please send by snail mail to:

Dear Classmate -
Keith Jernigan lost consciousness in his home on Thursday night, January 28th, and Frances, his wife, called 911
to have him rushed to the Arkansas Baptist Hospital by ambulance. After being diagnosed as having experienced a
sudden, spontaneous tear in his esophagus, Keith underwent emergency surgery at 3:00 AM the next morning.
Keith's condition is extremely rare and possibly fatal. For the past week, he has been in the ICU unit at the Baptist
Medical Center in Little Rock under heavy sedation with tubes in him and his arms in restraints. Frances and other
family members sit with him around the clock. Frances has been informed that, if he recovers, Keith will probably
have to be hospitalized for two months or more.

All of you should be advised of a Big Scam aimed at Grandparents. This morning I received a phone call to "Grandma
Nancy" from "your favorite Grandson". (There are many whom I call favorite.) This "boy" said, promise you won't tell
my parents. He was in Buffalo, NY. Had gone with a couple of boys, they decided to cross the border, marijuana was
found in the other boys bags and they tested positive for recent use but not "my Grandson". He had been asked to
testify against the other two. He needed some money to post bail. I told him I could not send any money without
speaking first to his Father, even though I had promised not to speak to him. I asked to speak to someone in charge
and was "transferred" to Officer John Peters who said with bail posted the boy would see a Judge this afternoon otherwise
he would be held for two weeks or longer before seeing a Judge....and a Court appointed Attorney, Jill Thomas, would be his
council. I asked to speak to this Attorney and while the call was "being transferred" it was disconnected.
There was no call back.

After the call .... I called the Father of the boy I had though was calling. He assured me that both boys were in
Oklahoma City and in school because he had taken them himself.
Attorney Charles Saunders of our State Attorney General's office said he had heard of this before but the border crossing
was going into Mexico.
Enough people are conned this way to keep them trying. At $2,650 to post bail, a couple of minutes could be quite
lucrative.
Be alert, be aware, a lot of people want your money.
Stay warm........ ..... Nancy Eaton Martin

Dear former classmates,
This letter concerns our Reunion Committee's bank account, which now amounts to a little more than $1700.00. The balance
is the result of good management and the sales of T-shirts, caps, posters, reunion booklets and donations.
Several of you have served as our treasurer over the years, none longer than Dick Finch, to whom we should all be grateful.
Your Finance Committee has reached the conclusion that the time has come to close out this bank account. And we are
seeking your input on this matter. Various suggestions have been made; the most frequent suggestion has been that we
should spend this money to pay for this Christmas party and perhaps for the spring picnic. The money would be used for
food and drink, but not for alcoholic beverages.
If you have a strong opinion about the liquidation of this account please advise Gene Eberle, Dick Finch or me. We will
proceed based on a consensus.
Sincerely,
Bob Bailey

On Sun 11/22/09 Clarence Peacock of Bell South wrote:
If you read a recent front page story of the SF Chronicle, you would have read about a female humpback whale who had become
entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to
struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line
tugging in her mouth.
A fisherman spotted her just east of the Farallon Islands (outside the Golden Gate ) and radioed an environmental group for
help.
Within a few hours, the rescue team arrived and determined that she was so bad off the only way to save her was to dive in
and untangle her. They worked for hours with curved knives and eventually freed her.
She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, and nudged them, pushed them gently around ... she was thanking
them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives.
The guy who cut the rope out of her mouth said her eyes were following him the whole time, and he will never be the same.
May you, and all those you love, be so blessed and fortunate to be surrounded by people who will help you get untangled from
the things that are binding you. And may you always know the joy of giving and receiving gratitude.
That's my wish for all of you this Thanksgiving season!!

Jim, Elsie Bailey's daughter told me this day that Elsie was at Home Depot
Sunday afternoon to buy some landscaping blocks when a pile of them fell on
her,.
Elsie's back was badly injured and her ankles are cut and scraped. She is
at home on pain medication and cannot walk because of the still intense
pain. She said ex-Rays did show some hairline fractures but they thought
they were from an old injury so the damage is to the ligaments, muscles,
nerves. Bob was at home but was quickly there. Thought she could use some
friendly cheering up.
Hope you two are staying fairly well and happy.
Sorry everyone missed our picnic. I was there in my new Buggy because
I had reserved a campsite for four days right on the river front...It was
fun for the pups and me even in all the rai Later............. Nancy Eaton

She is very sick with cancer. Her husband, Lamon, is in a nursing home in

After they married in Little Rock, they moved to Jackson, MS, where they
owned a dance studio. Their daughter Emily has been taking care of Jeanne
when Jeanne wasn't in the hospital. There may be some old friends who would
like to get in touch with her. I don't know how widely you want to share
this news, but I'm sure there would be some readers who would remember her
well and might want to drop her a note or card. Their home address is:

..............................................................................
................
ANNE HALL BAILEY, Ph.D., of Little Rock died on July 9, 2009, at a Little Rock
hospital. Born on Oct. 31, 1959, in Little Rock, Anne was the beloved daughter
of Nancy Hall Bailey, who preceded her in death, and her father R. Robert
Bailey and wonderful stepmother Elsie Weaver Bailey.
Surviving Anne, besides her father, are her beloved brother Ric and his wife
Lori of Little Rock; aunts, Elizabeth Benton of Conway and Grace Bristol of
Kerrville, Texas; cousins, Sharon Lessenberry and Mark Benton (Virginia) of
Conway, Christy Chilcott of Las Vegas, Frank Bailey Jr. (Paula) of Centennial,

Ann started “school” at age two at the Anthony School, and finished Hall
High in 1977. Along the way she attended Williams, Forrest Heights, Booker

volleyball in the church league. Her first college was at Birmingham
Southern in Alabama where she completed the requirements for a degree in
chemistry. After a while working in the medical field she returned to
college and earned a B.A. in English at the University of Alabama,
Birmingham, in 1986; an M.A. in English, also at UAB in 1988; and finally
her Ph.D. in English in 1994 at the University of Southern Mississippi. She
was an outstanding writer and shared in writing two books and had a number

Samford University; University of Southern Mississippi; Southeastern
Louisiana University; King’s College in London, England; UT Chattanooga and
finally, in her final illness, as an adjunct professor at Pulaski Technical
College in North Little Rock.
Among her cherished memories was growing up with many friends on North Bryan

her two dogs, Jesse and Zack. She specified that their ashes be buried with
her. And, at her request, she will be buried beside her grandparents C.G.
“Crip” Hall and Nancy Johnson Hall.
Anne expressed her special gratitude to her special friend and physician,
Dr. Jay Holland.
A Graveside service will be at Roselawn Memorial Park at 10 a.m. Saturday,
July 11, 2009, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Second
Presbyterian Church, officiated by Dr. Rev. Karen Akin.
Memorials would be appropriate if made to the Humane Society of Pulaski

Joan and All -
Yes, Barbara Grundfest was well known but not officially in our class. I have
limited postings to the Class of '47 email listserv to class activities and to
class members or their immediate relations. I had hoped if someone thought
others or other news should be mentioned, they could post a notice to the
group ... it's been a little disappointing to find myself the only person
posting emails to the class.
Yesterday's Arkansas Democrat Gazette obituary for Barbara Grundfest Bauman
reads:
................................................................
BARBARA GRUNDFEST BAUMAN, 80, passed away at her home, surrounded by her
family, on April 8, 2009. She was born in Little Rock on April 3, 1929.
Bobby is survived by her husband of almost 60 years, Stanley M. Bauman Jr.;
her children, David Bauman and his wife Kathy, Merrill Bauman Stern and her
husband Michael, and Steve Bauman and his wife Jill; her grandchildren,
Katie Bauman and her husband Adam Eckstein, Annie Bauman, Jennifer Stern Adair
and her husband Jordan, Lisa Stern and her fiancee Alex Fay, Jay Bauman and
Barrie Bauman; and her great-granddaughter, Gracie Ruth Eckstein.
She is also survived by her cousin, Janet Mayersohn; her sister-in-law,
Judy Grundfest; her close friends, Norma Jean and Gene Lockwood; her
daughter-in-law, Susan Bauman; her friend and wonderful caregiver, Bertha
Roberts; and many nieces, nephews and cousins who meant so much to her. She
was predeceased by her parents, Dave Grundfest Sr. and Maurine Frauenthal
Grundfest, and her brother, Dave Grundfest Jr.
Bobby lived her life in passionate support of the things she knew were
important. She was passionate about her country and her city, although she
and Bud spent 20 wonderful winters at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic
where they made many close friends. She was passionate about her Judaism and
Congregation B’Nai Israel in Little Rock, of which she was a lifelong member,
and she passed that passion on to her children and grandchildren. She was
passionate about equal rights for all people which she demonstrated to her
children in many ways, including her work on the STOP campaign. But most of
all, Bobby was passionate about her family, and especially her husband, Bud,
who were the center of her life.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Congregation B’Nai Israel,
3700 N. Rodney Parham Road. Burial will be in Jewish Oakland Cemetery.
The family requests that memorials be made to Congregation B’Nai Israel (Music
Fund), 3700 N. Rodney Parham Road, Little Rock, Ark. 72212; or the Arkansas

Jim, item 8 on Rays changes gives me credit for Grady Millers message. As I read
the 47 letters I realized that I had met Rose many years ago. I worked for Eddie
Tabor Grocery at 23 rd and Arch for four or five years in Junior & Senior
High days. Actually, I knew her mother and grandmother very well and peddled
many- many bags of groceries up that steep driveway. The WW I German helment
referred to would likely belong to Rose's Grandmother Shipman. I often cashed a
military pension check for her and the address included "To the unmarried widow
of" (do not recall the rank of Rose's grandfather--but it seems it was high).
Pass my regrets to Grady for steeling his lime light, I could not find his e-mail
listing .

Ray, I just used six times as a figure of speech. Most of the time when
you forward a 'clean' page, it will arrive at the recipient with */one/*
hash mark. If they forward it without eliminating the /*one */hash
mark it then will add another one, and so on. Usually somebody (I
always try to clean them all up) will correct it.
So...if 7 people just forward it, there will be /*seven*/ left margin
hash marks. Also, in forwarding mail, all of the people listed (along
with their email addresses) are also forwarded. My daughter will send
mail that has 5 or 6 groups of people sometimes and some hackers just
save all of those things (email addresses) and wait until they have
about 500 or so and they'll sell them to other hackers for their mailing
lists. Not for a lot of money, but it all adds up apparently!
I'm trying to locate the other bit of information I mentioned. It's
helpful also. When I do I'll send it to you.
My best! Dean

Ray, I came across the email where you commented on the ">" marks on the left
margin. That's one of my pet peeves...when six generations of 'forwards' are
sent, complete with the hash marks. The remedy for that plus any other awkwardly
spaced mailed is the site : Email Stripper. Just Google "EmailStripper" and
you'll get the home page. This program is absolutely free and is so handy for
cleaning up messy mail. It's a copy and paste program.
I will forward another email helper with some good rules to follow to keep the
clutter down, plus some other deeds we can do for our fellow classmates. I hope
all is well with everybody. Let me tout a new book I'm reading that is pretty
powerful in these times we're in. It's titled "What In the World is Going On"
and is written by a minister in California, David Jeremiah. Some Chapters are
titled "The Israel Connection", "Islamic Terrorism", "Vanished Without a Trace",
"Does America Have a Role in Prophecy" "New Axis of Evil", and discusses
Armageddon, etc.
I personally feel that this is NOT a time to flee from discussions of the End
Time. Our working manual, the Holy Bible has plenty of information regarding
this, and anybody can be encouraged rather than discouraged by following the
Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth...B.I.B.L.E. This is not a time to
bypass all of the concerns going on no matter what our status in life is.
Rich-Poor; Baptist-Catholic;Tall-Short; Fat-Skinny, Grumpy Old Man-Nice Old Lady
(or vice-versa ;-) ) . We can focus our thoughts from the wonderful life God has
given us all these years to the eternity we have ahead of us.
There is peace in knowing what to expect, and Dr. Jeremiah offers words of
encouragement while also reminding us how to live in the meantime - Watch, Work,
and Wait. My best to all of my classmates and families.

Rose Pickens lived across the street from Senator Robinson.
The front of her house had an Egyptian look.
The obit picture showed just how classically lovely she was.
And full of spirit.
Her mother's dad had some wonderful collector items including
a spike helmet of a German WWI officer.

Ray,
I am not sure if I am doing this correctly or not, but I wanted to let the class of 1947 know that my sister, Ethelyn Hester
McKinney,Class of 1947, is celebrating her 80th birthday on March 9th. I would appreciate her classmates sending her
birthday cards at the following address: Ethelyn Hester McKinney, 9 Westmont Circle, Little Rock, AR 72209. Is this
posting a possibility?
Thanks, Geraldine Hester Maddox, Class of 1950

Jim, my daughter left the REP after 22 years and is now working for Wildwood -
she asked if I would send this notice to everyone I know to encourage folks to
attend the Wildwood Lantern Festival. Cliff Baker is the new Wildwood Director
- is very creative - and I'm sure the festival will be spectacular. Could you
please forward this to our email list. Thanks.

January 14, 2009
The following obituary appeared in the Sunday, January 18, 2009 Arkansas Democrat
Gazette.
.........................................................
LONGVIEW, Texas - Rose Kirkpatrick passed away Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009 at her
home in Longview, Texas. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20,
2009, at 2 p.m. at Trinity Episcopal Church of Longview with Reverend Kevin
Wittmayer and The Very Reverend Dr. Michael Carter Macey officiating. Visitation
will follow in Parish Hall. A private burial will be held on a later date at the
family’s ranch.
Rose Shipton Pickens Kirkpatrick was born on Aug. 22, 1929, in Little Rock, Ark.,
to Eudora Rose Shipton Pickens and Paul Jackson Pickens. A fourth-generation
Arkansan, she was raised in Little Rock, graduated from Little Rock High School
and furthered her education at Ogontz Junior College (now a part of Pennsylvania
State University) in Philadelphia. She married Kenneth L. Kirkpatrick of Fort
Smith, Ark., on Sept. 6, 1952, in Little Rock and they moved to Longview in 1963
after becoming owners of R&K Distributors Inc., a distributor of Anheuser-Busch
products in the East Texas area.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; her mother, Eudora; her
father, Jack, and her stepmother, Charlotte Stuart Pickens.
She is survived by her daughters, Gail Elizabeth Pickens Kirkpatrick Martin and
husband, John Carmichael Martin III, Rose Kimberly Kirkpatrick, Victoria Shipton
Kirkpatrick and husband, Bruce Bridges all of Longview; her grandchildren,
Victoria Kimberly Martin Bonnen and husband, Dennis Bonnen of Angleton, Texas,
Jaclyn Gail Pickens Martin Abernathy and husband, Clay Abernathy, John Kenneth
Martin, Alexandra Rose Cox, and Ryan Kirkpatrick Cox all of Longview and Julia
Shipton Cook of San Francisco, Calif.; and her great-grandchildren David Jackson
Carmichael Bonnen and Gregory James Bonnen of Angleton and Jack Madison Abernathy
of Longview. Her sister-in-law Gail Kirkpatrick Tompkins of Little Rock, Ark.,
and brother-in-law Frederick Calhoun Kirkpatrick, Jr. of Fort Smith, Ark., also
survive her.
Rose’s life centered on service to her community. Her mother was an active member
of the Junior League of Little Rock and a role model to her daughter. At the age
of 12, you could find Rose rolling balls of yarn that would eventually be knitted
into bags for the American soldiers during WWII. She was an active member of the
Junior Leagues of Little Rock, Lubbock, and Dallas, and the Service League of
Longview, which later became the Junior League. Rose was also a member of the
Daughters of the American Revolution.
Rose devoted countless hours to the betterment of all aspects of the community
including wellness, education, art and culture, and care for the less fortunate.
Her generosity and support is evident throughout the community as she was a loyal
supporter of Good Shepherd Medical Center, Trinity Episcopal Church, Trinity
School of Texas, Gregg County Historical Museum, Longview Museum of Fine Arts,
Humane Society of Gregg County, Longview Community Theatre, and Crisman School.
For her tireless efforts, she received several accolades including the East Texas
Heritage Award, Honoree of the Year by the American Heart Association, and
Honorary Chairman of the Cattle Baron’s Ball of the American Cancer Society.
Speaking to her motivation for being an active volunteer, Rose once said, “the
personal joy of community service comes from the knowledge that giving back to
one’s city will in some way provide an investment for the future for family and
friends and will extend to the next generation and beyond.”
In the spirit of that statement, the family asks that in lieu of flowers memorials
be made to Trinity School of Texas, 215 Teague Street, Longview, Texas, 75601,
Trinity Episcopal Church, 906 Padon Street, Longview, Texas 75601, or Texas Home
Healthcare Hospice, 3220 N. 4th Street, Longview, Texas, 75605.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to all of Rose’s faithful
friends, extended family and her loving and tireless caregivers who loved our
Mother, prayed for her and cared for her when she could not care for herself. May
God bless each and every one of you.
