Subject: How are you?

Ray,

Now that Summer has finally come to Houston.....that is the calendar talking. It has been summer here for a month before the "official" date and the temp. is stuck on 95+ every day and then there is the humidity too.. The yard men tell me that to beat the heat......you have get started in the dark. I am sure you all do not have that problem in Ohio. Are you all still enjoying Spring?

We would like to have an updated medical report on your condition and how you are doing (Please).

The last time I talked to Curtis Finch, he thought he had someone that you could tutor for the LRHS site. Did this happen?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Regards,

Wally>p

Dear Mildred

I was going over the lost Tiger list for the LRHS class of 1951 and saw that Betty Taylor was on the list. She was a dear friend of mine, and she passed away in 1996, I believe.

Her married name was Betty Jo Taylor Brooks. She left a daughter, Kim, and a son, Kevin, behind. She also had three \sisters, Pat, Nita, Brenda, and a brother, Rickey.

Betty was still living in Little Rock at the time of her death.

Hope this will help you up date your list.

Subject: THANKS FOR YOUR VERY NICE NOTE

Archie & Sue,

Please express my belated, but sincere, thanks to the Band Alumni for the beautiful and thoughtful card you sent after my surgery. It was a very nice thing and I appreciate it very much.

In digging my through the things that have piled up on my desk this year I realize I never did offer any wonderful suggestions on a permanent home for the band memorabilia. There is a very good reason for this; I have not come up with any wonderful suggestions. Has your committee developed any ideas or conclusions? I have East Side's band director Charlie W. North's paddle, The Board of Education, which I will contribute once you have found a home for the memorabilia. I may have some other things including some CD's and tapes related to our 2000 Band Reunion.

Barbara and I hope to attend my LRHS Class of '49 in mid-September. If we do make it I hope we can get together with the two of you.

Please give our regards to everyone.

Ray,

Here is information from Bob Ewbank (class of 1951) about his new book that you might want to list on the LRHS web site. Please feel free to edit it.

I hope you all are staying cool these days.....................it is really hot in Houston and that 100+ is becoming a norm for us. I used to say that I prefer the heat to the cold.........well I may change my mind now.

My book “John Wesley, Natural Man, and the ‘Isms’ has been published. The ‘Isms’ are Heathenism, Judaism, Deism, Roman Catholicism, Quakerism, and Mysticism. The questions being answered are: how do each of them differ from John Wesley’s idea of True Christianity, and what are the prospects for those holding these views being saved.

Written for the layperson as well as the scholar, there is a Study Guide in the back of the book to help those who want to use the book for individual as well as group study. The Study Guide has questions in the front, which are answered along with page numbers, later in the Guide.

Bishop Rueben P. Job of the United Methodist Church wrote some kind words on the back cover of the book.

To find the book go on the internet to:

1. Wipfandstock.com
2. On “Advanced Search” found on the left of the page type in “Ewbank” and you will go directly to the book. If you type in “John Wesley” you will be sent to a Wesley page and the book is the third one down.
3. For your information, the book is $23.00 at bookstores, but at the web site it is only $18.40

Hope you guys are doing well and enjoying life.

God bless.

Hi Wally,

Went to see Basil (Butler class of 1951) in the hospital on Thurs.--his first day out of IC. Just talked with his brother, Jerry & he's doing well & should be going home Sunday. He'll be hard to keep down as he's a HARD worker! He & present wife of around 4 year, Belinda, live in Beebe but I do not have his address.

Yes, Oley's (Rooker class of 1950) honor is very appropriate & he would be so pleased as he loved name recognition. Sue called Oley's mother, Louise Leonard, just now & she said Oley knew that the library would be built but did not know that it would be named for him. He had lobbied for it & for a fire station to be built--it has not happened yet. She is such a lovely lady, 95, and sharp as a tack. She commented that it was the first 4th of July that she'd been alone.

Good to hear from you!

Ray,

I have been trying to find the keeper of the records for the 1958 class. Pat Spann with the 1953 class is helping me look for it.

The reason is that one of my friends that we grew up together on the east side of LR passed away in Shreveport recently and since the service was private and no obituary I wanted to pass on the information to his class. Normally I would go to your site for the information.................... ...... but you stop at 1953.

Do you have any plans to add any additional years? I know that it is a lot of trouble and the pay is not any better but we have are accustomed to depending you for the information. I could probably find a few dollars for you if that would help.

Another question..........do you have a #2 person that you are training to take over when you can no longer see the keyboard? I know that you are a couple of years older then me. This is something that I have been trying to do in my genealogy research as well as some of the volunteer jobs that I am involved with on a regular basis. It is not easy to find people that have the same level of dedication.

We always enjoy hearing from you.

Look at 6th fold, it is an angled downward fold. The 7th fold would therefore 'have a straight edge on the right side. Then the 8th fold is angled upward. Here is what the 7th fold represents:

7th fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.

Elene Garrett (Shay), Class of '51. Ray, you have me as Ellen, but it is Elene. Thanks, and keep up the good work.....

Ray,

The history of the 21-gun salute is covered by the official US Army history webpage: It http://www.history.army.mil/faq/salute.htm. It's not derived from the sum of the integers of the date 1776 as incorrectly posted on several websites! This issue is covered by Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/military/21gun.asp

Haven't kept up with our class as I should. I'm doing fine for the times. Still live in Kirkwood, MO. Going fairly strong, have trouble with the ticker every now and then but with modern day meds and heart pacer, I keep on being active. Give my regards to our class and tell Archie Senn I'm proud of him carrying on in the good old tradition of Saxophone players.

Best regards,

Ray, while I appreciate all you do for the LRHS alums, I MUST ask that you exclude my name when you are forwarding videos and/or movies. Unfortunately, my 'puter is older and slower and DSL is not available in my area which means that forwards of videos and movies take an inordinate amount of time to download - and watch.

I am aware I will be missing good stuff, laffs, etc. but it just doesn't work for me to keep getting these.

Hope you can work this out w/o excluding me from the usual 'updates'.

Many thanks,

Betty is hoping to go home today. We saw her about 2 pm and the doctor that put in the pace maker said she could go when the heart doctor agreed. She is ready. Her spirits are great and they will let her heal and in 6-8 weeks will see about what to do about the caroid arteries.

She is happy getting calls and cards, also.

I didn't think to send you these addresses for the band members. Hopefully, Betty will be home soon -- I haven't had a chance to see her yet, but hope to this afternoon (that is, if she is still in the hospital). The hospital is Baptist Medical Center, Springhill Drive, North Little Rock and her room number is 117. Oley is usually at home except for the VA visits, I understand.
Have had several requests for these addresses:
From telephone book: Oley E. Rooker
7715 Woodforest Lane
Little Rock, AR 72210 Betty's is from the card she gave me at the last tour. She said to be sure to spell out the words: "Drive" and "North". She says her postman is really dumb!

Here is the latest on John.

We visited with he and Barbara and son yesterday at Methodist Hospital - Medical Center. He had the surgery last Friday.

We talked for about an hour about the good old days in LR. We had not seen them since their anniversary party a couple of years ago. They live out north and we live in the southwest part of Houston. A lot of miles between us but we have the phone and email.

Regards,

Wally

Dear Friends,
The pathology report has come back, and IT IS ALL CLEAR! NO CANCER!! John somehow had no problems, then developed chronic pancreatic and had to have the surgery. It was DEFINITELY pre-cancerous, but was caught in time.
One of his doctors said today that John is the healthiest patient he has ever had in his 30 years practice. I asked him what he was doing in the hospital if he was so healthy! The doctors are all flabbergasted. John is supposed to be coming home within the next couple of days - probably tomorrow, but no promises.
We will be forever in debt to all of you for your prayers, concerns, emails, calls, everything. Now you can pray for me to be able to take care of him. He has only walked approximately 4 times and still has a bunch of tubes, etc. They said most of this will be gone when they release him. He has not eaten a solid meal yet. He is still on broth. I wish they would wait until he has a regular meal or two to see how he will handle it, but I am not the doctor.
Thank you all again. You have been great.
Barbara

Hi everybody,

This is from the Blacklaws:

Hi Pat, talked to Betty today and she is having a pacemaker put in tomorrow, Wednesday, around 12:00. The doctors seem to think this will solve her blood pressure and heart problems. Talked to Oley a few minutes ago and he told me he had 2 months left. He's decided to finally ask for some pain medication. Please let everyone know. Thanks, Betty

Barbara,

Thanks for the update on John's condition. We hope for a good report from pathology next week.

Let us know his room number when you get a chance. It is hard to get this information from hospital information.

Do you know how long he will be in the hospital. They love to send you home and tell you to "call 911 if you have any problems."

Our prayers are with you and the family.

We received an email that Betty Brooks Yarbrough was in the hospital in NLR as she had a stroke and was looking at having a choroid (sp) artery surgery.

I am sending a copy of your email to Archie so they can be thinking of John too.

Regards,

Wally and Norma

The doctors say that it does not look like cancer, but will wait until the pathology test report next week. I do not have a room number to give to you because he is still in ICU. He is supposed to be going to a room sometime today.
Hope all is going well with both of you.

I received this from Carolyn (Besancon) Ringer last night. - - Pat O'Donoghue

Friends -
Tried to call Betty and then her daughter and got no answer. Just in case, called Baptist Springhill in NLR and, sure enough, she is a patient there. She is in the Clinical Decision Unit. I went to see her this afternoon and she is, as always, in good spirits, but pretty weak. Night before last, her blood pressure started to zoom and her daughter took her to the hospital yesterday morning. They have gotten her bp to lower gradually from 204 upper number to 161 last count. Since the weekend is upon us, nothing will probably be done prior to Monday - except perhaps making some determinations as to what treatment she may face on Monday. We just need to keep her in our prayers until she is out of the woods. Thought you guys would like to know as much as I do. Love, Carolyn
