MVL Archive Simulation Championship (ASC)
The 1st Annual MVL Simulation Championship will use the MVL Archive's simulation engine to simulate match-ups between the greatest MVL teams of all time. The championship will be conducted in the following format: 50 of the greatest teams in MVL history will be selected to compete in 5 pools of 10 teams each. Each pool will be conducted like a regular MVL season, with each team playing all other teams in the pool. The 5 pool champions along with 5 wildcards will advance to the Championship pool. The winner of the Championship pool will be declared the 1st annual MVL Archive Simulation Champion.
Phase I: Team Selection
50 of the greatest teams in MVL history were selected to compete in the ASC. Filling just 50 spots with so many great teams to choose from was a tricky task. In order to get the very best from the MVL, I developed a 4-tier criterion for team admittance into the ASC.
1) All teams who had completed a regular season with no more than one loss or tie OR had won a playoff game were considered for entrance (77 teams).
2) To narrow the field, all teams who had won at least 2 playoff games were admitted (6 teams).
3) From the remaining teams the teams that had completed a regular season with no losses were admitted (33 teams).
4) Of the remaining teams, those that had lost once, and had not tied in a regular season were ranked according to percentage of points scored in their MVL games (PF/(PF+PA)). The top 13 teams were selected to complete the field.
The selected teams are as follows:
New Lexington: 1946, 1954, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1969, 1970, 1972, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1990, 2002
Crooksville: 1944, 1947, 1959, 1960, 1962, 1963, 1977, 1993.
Sheridan: 1985, 1986, 1987, 1993, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2004, 2005
John Glenn / New Concord: 1956, 1957, 1958, 1978, 1980, 1981, 2001.
Morgan / M&M: 1940, 1965, 1968, 1982, 2000.
Philo: 1983, 1984, 1988
Tri-Valley: 1989
West Muskingum: 1968, 1981
Caldwell: 1952.
Roseville: 1949
Phase II: Pool Selection
These 50 teams were then seeded according to their MVL PF/(PF+PA). The top 5 seeds were distributed among the 5 pools so that all pools are as balanced as possible. Following the placement of teams some identically seeded times were moved from one pool to another in order to evenly distribute teams (So that 6 New Lex teams were not all in the same pool, for instance) The pools are listed on the main page of this section of the MVL Archive and will remain there throughout the championship.
Phase III: Pool Play
The five pools will serve as leagues unto themselves. Each pool member will play all other pool members once during the course of the pool. Each round of simulations will work as a week would in a regular football season. Four rounds of play will be simulated each week. For a complete schedule refer to the main page.
Teams competing in the pool will be awarded 1-pt for a win and .5-pt for a tie. The team with the most points at the completion of the pool will be declared the pool champion. In the case of a tie, head-to-head record will decide the winner, in case of a tie with regard to head-to-head record, the winner will be determined by PF-PA, If PF-PA still results in a tie a one-game playoff will be simulated between the two teams.
Each pool champion will gain a birth into the Championship Pool. Along with the 5 regular pool champions, the Championship Pool will consist of 5 wildcards. The wildcards will be the teams with best W-L-T record among the non-pool winners. In case of a tie, PF-PA will determine wild-card entries.
Phase IV: The Championship Pool
The Championship Pool will be run in the same manner as the regular pools with 2 rounds of games being simulated each Monday and Thursday. The Winner will be crowned the 1st Annual MVL Archive Simulation Champion.
