The following is a timeline of events that have shaped the history of MVL football. The timeline includes all entry and exit dates of member schools, as well as state championships and team performances of historic significance. As with most things on the MVL archive this timeline is a work in progress. If you have information that you believe to be significant to this timeline, please send it our way.
1930: MVL predecessor, the Big 5, begins football competition. Member schools Include: (1) Crooksville Big Red, (2) Glouster Tomcats, (3) Malta-McConnelsville Big Reds, (4) New Concord Little Muskies, (5) New Lexington Panthers
1931: The Crooksville Big Reds go unbeaten, untied and unscored upon.
1933: The Caldwell Redskins begin football competition in the old Big 5; the league's name is changed to the Big 6.
1935: The Crooksville Big Reds change their mascot, becoming the Crooksville Ceramics.
1938: The MVL is created when the Philo Electrics join up with members of the Big 6.
1943: The MVL disbands for one season due to wartime gas rationing.
1944: The MVL resumes play, with two new member schools, bringing the total number of schools to 9. The St. Thomas Irish & The Roseville Ramblers join the MVL. With two new schools entering the league and the gas ration still an issue, a round-robin schedule format proves impossible. Member schools play between 5 and 7 contests against other league schools.
1946: St. Thomas abolishes its football program. With the absence of St. Thomas the league resumes regular round-robin scheduling.
1950: Dresden's Jefferson J-Hawks begin MVL play, bringing the school count to nine.
1956: The New Concord Little Muskies go unbeaten, untied and unscored upon.
1962: To commemorate John Glenn's historic space flight, the East Muskingum School district names their new high school in his honor. The New Concord Little Muskies become the John Glenn Little Muskies.
1963: The Maysville Panthers join the league bringing the school count to 10.
1964: The Caldwell Redskins do not compete in MVL play, leaving the total number of league schools at 9
1965: The Glouster Tomcats exit, leaving the league with only 8 schools for the 1965 season.
1966: The Sheridan Generals and The West Muskingum Tornadoes join the MVL, restoring the number of member schools to 10. The schools of Morgan County consolidate to form the Morgan Local school district. The M&M Big Reds become the Morgan Raiders. Schools in the Dresden area consolidate to form Tri-Valley. The Jefferson J-Hawks become the Tri-Valley Scotties.
1970: Roseville is absorbed by the Franklin Local school district. The old Roseville high school ceases operations and consolidates with Philo, leaving the school Count at 9. The New Lexington Panthers are crowned Ohio Class AA AP & UPI State Champions.
1974: The River View Black Bears become a member of the MVL brining the school count back to 10.
1976: The New Lexington Panthers are crowned Ohio Class AA AP & UPI State Champions, but fail to win in the first round of the state playoffs.
1977: The Crooksville Ceramics defeat Ashatabula St. John in the State finals to become Ohio Class A champions.
2003: The River View Black Bears leave the MVL, bringing the school count back down to 9.
