Season Previews
Throughout the 1950s season preview games were commonplace across the country. In our area, Zanesville began the tradition in 1948 with the first annual Football Olympia.

The Olympia featured between eight to twelve high school teams who would all come together for an evening of football. For the Olympia's first ten years the teams were separated into two squads. One squad would represent the Navy and the other would represent the Army. The teams that made up the squads alternated quarters to play teams from the opposing squad. It was essentially a series of very short games, but the scores were compounded with score of the previous games to create a squad total. The evenings were often touted as celebrations of area schools, complete with pre-game ceremonies and 90-minute band performances. These preview games did not count in the record books, but they serve as an important piece of football past, and as such they will appear here on the MVL Archive.
